He studied composition and piano at the Vienna Musikhocschule and in 1994 he founded the festival 'Klangspuren', now an international renowned festival for contemporary music. Leaving the festival in 2003, he subsequently established the Swarovski 'Musik im Riesen' Festival in Wattens, Austria which he still runs. Current and recent highlights include Die Schatzinsel (world première) and Fidelio for Opernhaus Zurich, Così fan tutte in a staging by Michael Haneke for Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie and his US operatic debut conducting Die Fledermaus for Houston Grand Opera.
