Performance, improvisation and composition are embedded in all areas of the course, and practical workshops are the main teaching mode. Students are encouraged to develop their own distinctive voice while acknowledging the jazz tradition. Teaching staff are successful professional musicians who are active in the music industry and help students to build the contacts and experience required for a music industry career.

MA Creative Entrepreneurship (Music) (1 f/t, 2 p/t). Course combines a broad understanding of the fast-changing creative economy with specialist music expertise. Staff are academics and practitioners in music/business and have active industry connections with record labels, music organisations and artists. The course equips students with the skills/knowledge to be successfully self-employed, to start their own business or to bring an entrepreneurial approach to established organisations. Guest speakers from Sony Music Entertainment, LSO, Jazz FM, PRS for Music, ThinkSync Music, BBC, have all presented at the department’s weekly Concerts and Colloquia series.
