The Cornwall Youth Brass Band is the oldest county youth band in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1955 and held its first residential course in 1959, the start of a long tradition, which has continued without a break until the present time. Indeed the band now holds two courses a year, at Christmas and Easter, each culminating in a public concert. The season starts in September when we welcome our new musicians who were successful in their auditions in August.
For over 40 years CYO has been providing opportunities for young instrumentalists from across Cornwall to experience the challenges and rewards of playing in a full symphony orchestra. The orchestra has offered invaluable experience to a succession of CYO members, some of whom have gone on to play with the South West Youth Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and European Union Youth Orchestra. The CYO experience is all about developing musical teamwork and enjoying being part of and sharing the buzz of orchestral life. Director - Tim Boulton.

CYWO was formed in September 1985 and made its debut in the City Hall, Truro. Alongside the other major county ensembles, it gives young instrumentalists throughout the county the opportunity of making music together. Concert programmes have included a wide range of symphonic band music drawn from classical, romantic and twentieth century repertoire, and several new commissioned works. Director – Janet Elston.

The Cwmtawe Youth Band was formed by Wayne Pedrick ten years ago with children from local primary schools in the Pontardawe area and comes under the umbrella of the West Glamorgan Music Service and is supported by the Music Service Manager Mr Phillip Emanuel. Wayne works for the West Glamorgan Music Service as a Peripatetic Brass Teacher. The age group of the Youth Band are between 13 and 18 years of age and all members are from the Upper Swansea Valley area who attend Ystalyfera, Cwmtawe, Bryntawe and Amman Valley Comprehensive Schools.

The choir is open to all abilities and is aimed at children in school years 4 to 8 (aged 8 to 13). No prior experience is necessary just enthusiasm for singing with others and commitment to attending rehearsals, concerts and events. The choir’s unique approach allows children to develop their singing, performance and communication skills in a safe, fun and engaging environment. There are regular concerts and events. EMYSO is a string orchestra directed by distinguished violinist and conductor Richard Howarth.
