Established in 1951 by the Besançon Festival, the Besançon Conducting Competition is the most complete in the world with a repertoire which spans classical, Romantic, 20th century, and contemporary music, as well as symphony, opera and concerto.
The Competition is open to all artists under 35 who wish to become professional conductors, whatever their training or their experience. It is the only Competition where all candidates are selected during live auditions.

Two resident choirs, the Charles Wood Singers (aged 18 ) and the Charles Wood Girls' Choir (aged 12-18) perform at concerts, lead worship at services and record broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and 4. 2014-15 marks the fourth season of Julia Fischer appearing with her own quartet. The Julia Fischer Quartet unites Ms. Fischer with three renowned musicians, each soloists in their own right: violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, violinist Nils Mönkemeyer and cellist Benjamin Nyffenegger. These four artists have performed chamber music jointly in different configurations for multiple years. The idea to establish a string quartet was born in 2010, when all four musicians acquired a broad repertoire during Julia Fischer's festival at Lake Starnberg.
