National Schools Symphony Orchestra (NSSO)

Gold member

The National Schools Symphony Orchestra (NSSO) has, since 1994, provided high quality residential orchestral courses for talented young players aged 9 to 19. It has always offered vital experience to those who aspire to membership of the National Youth Orchestra, bridging the gap between school or county orchestra and the NYO. But its single annual residential course is very often a better fit for those talented individuals with wide ranging interests and commitments for whom music is important but possibly not a career or higher education goal.

The National Schools Symphony Orchestra (NSSO) provides an annual week-long residential course for talented instrumentalists and singers aged 9-19. With three orchestras (grade 3-5, grade 6-8 and grade 8 ), a unique Conducting Course and the NSSO Chorus, there is much on offer for all young musicians and the week culminates in final performances at national concert venues.  The courses are held at Malvern College, with its outstanding facilities for music and extra-curricular activity, set amid beautiful surroundings, in the heart of Elgar country. NSSO works hard to support players whose parents need help to meet the cost of the course, as it believes finance should not be a defining factor in deciding to apply. Means-tested bursaries are available, covering up to a maximum of 80% of the course fee.
