Leon McCawley, one of Britain's foremost pianists, has forged a highly successful career since winning 1st Prize in the 1993 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna and 2nd Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition at age nineteen. Championing core classical repertoire together with the unknown, McCawley’s CD releases have been impressing critics far and wide. His 2012 CD of Brahms's Piano Music for Somm Recordings is no exception: “Plenty of dynamism and passion...consistent and inspired playing” (Gramophone).
Playing with eminent conductors including Semyon Bychkov, Manfred Honeck and Dmitrij Kitajenko, Leonard rejoins Christoph Eschenbach at the Washington National, after performances with Chicago, the London Philharmonic and Dresden Staatskapelle. A BBC New Generation Artist, he returns to the 2014 BBC Proms with John Storgards. Leonard is a fine recitalist: giving a world premiere at the Wigmore Hall in 2014. Artist in Residence at the Bremen Philharmonic Society; his distinguished chamber partners include Nicola Benedetti, Alexei Grynyuk and the Sitkovetsky Trio.
