Internationally-acclaimed French baritone Stephane Degout graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon and then became a member of the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Lyon. Degout gained international attention when he made a triumphant debut as Papageno at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 1999.
Stephen is a basso cantante / bass-baritone, with a voice dark in colour, bright in timbre, and with a ringing top. He graduated in economics from Christ's College, Cambridge, and studied singing at the Guildhall SMD, London. He made his professional debut in 1992, since when he has built up an enviable reputation in opera and concert work, singing for such companies as ROH, ENO, Opera North, Scottish Opera and English Touring Opera. Roles now include Wotan (Das Rheingold & Die Walkure) and Scarpia. Stephen combines his performing career with a thriving teaching practice.

Mr. Mix received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the pivotal role of Edward Gaines in the New York premiere of Richard Danielpour and Toni Morrison’s Margaret Garner, a new production by Tazewell Thompson, for which he received New York City Opera’s 2008 Christopher Keene Award.
