Swaledale Festival is an annual festival of music and arts based in the three most northerly Yorkshire Dales - Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale - a large rural area of outstanding beauty. Founded in 1972, the Festival begins on the Saturday of the late May Spring Bank Holiday each year and runs for two weeks. An annual celebration of voice which takes place in the coastal village of Glenarm, County Antrim in August each year. The festival includes BBC Radio 3 recitals and an annual vocal competition for opera singers. The competition is open to singers aged 18-28 born in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland: entrants are required to be studying voice at 3rd level or privately and pursuing a career in opera. Five finalists are selected, along with a piano intern, and they perform in a live competition finale in front of an audience and a jury panel to win the Deborah Voigt Opera Prize.
