DeNOTE’s musical approach returns to the roots of eighteenth-century performance style, exploring the soundworld of period instruments and integrating the latest scholarly research with a passion for live musical communication. Core programming focuses on classical era chamber music clarinet, violin, viola, cello, fortepiano, from which quintets, quartets and trios form our staple repertoire. DeNOTE’s performances bring novel perspectives combining the soundworld of period instruments with a bold expressive approach that goes beyond the notated texts into the world of creative improvisation.
Ensemble DeNOTE is an acclaimed period-instrument chamber group that performs across the UK and internationally. Our recent CD recordings of works by Mozart and Beethoven received 5* and 4* reviews in The Guardian, The Observer, The Birmingham Post, International Piano and Early Music Review.
Our recent series at St John's, Smith Square focused on rarely-heard chamber arrangements from c.1800 by Mozart and Beethoven of their own compositions, and those of their contemporaries (including Mozart's Gran' Partita, and Beethoven's Septet and Second Symphony).
