Uppingham's music-making has an enviable reputation for its outstanding musical tradition and exciting, dynamic projects. With music being threaded through the whole school community, we encourage and support individual excellence and mass participation. A large and committed team of specialist musicians bring considerable expertise and dedication to their individual and ensemble teaching.

Pupils have a vast range of performance opportunities at all levels. In recent years these have included performing at Trinity College, Cambridge, on BBC One at the Royal Albert Hall, at The Cathedral of St John The Divine, New York and St John's, Smiths Square, London. Future projects take school ensembles to King's College Chapel, Cambridge and Ely, Norwich, Barcelona and Bristol Cathedrals. Concerto concerts, weekly lunchtime concerts and a Recital Competition provide opportunities for the most able.

With six hundred and fifty weekly instrumental lessons, sixty practice rooms, sixty music staff, state-of-the-art Music Technology, three organs and countless concerts and ensembles, the Music Department is a lively and creative hub within the School.  Pupils frequently go on to careers in music following either Oxbridge Scholarships or specialised study at Conservatoires.  All styles of music-making - from Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary Classical to polyphony are supported and encouraged, reflecting the breadth of interest of both pupils and staff.

A recent inspection reported on the 'vibrant and committed congregational singing in which all participate, putting into practice the sentence in the school hymn book "Singing together binds us to the whole Uppingham community."'

Uppingham makes a significant investment in encouraging and nurturing talented individuals through an extensive Music Scholarship scheme. Candidates come from throughout the UK and currently include senior choristers from most major choir schools, including St Paul's, Salisbury and Gloucester Cathedrals, Westminster Abbey and King’s College Cambridge. Music Scholars receive Alexander Technique lessons.

The majority of the instrumental team come from London, Manchester and Birmingham and includes teachers of Alexander Technique, Accordion, French Horn, Viola, Orchestral Percussion, Jazz Piano and Music Technology. Their work is supported by a regular series of masterclasses. In 2015-16 the Uppingham International Masterclass series includes: Jack Leibeck (Violin), Angela Hewitt (Piano), Andrew Kennedy (Voice), Joy Farrall (Woodwind), Hannah Roberts (Cello) and Tom Wilson (Composition).
